Brazil Travel: Animal Watching in Pantanal
The largest wetland in the world, Pantanal, is a tropical region that covers a great portion of Brazil, but also extends to Bolivia and and Paraguay. A truly amazing and luxuriant land, Pantanal is the perfect destination for nature lovers who wish to immerse themselves in some of the most isolated and pristine nature. Live side by side with exotic animals for a few days and you will head back home with your heads filled with incredible images and memories.
Animal watching activities in Pantanal can sometimes be a bit scary, but they're also thrilling. There are not so many places where you can fish for piranhas, feed caimans, and observe jaguars as they hunt. The Pantanal, one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world, is believed to be home to over 1,000 bird species, 300 fish species, 400 mammalian species and at least 3,500 known plant species.
If you are not afraid to live in extreme conditions and abandon your comfort for a while, head out to Pantanal and get your fill of natural wonders! From your boat sailing across the Pantanal River, look out and try to catch a glimpse of the wild jaguars strolling down the banks and searching for their next meal. This is one of the most magical experiences you can get. If you manage to keep quiet, you might be able to watch jaguars for over an hour, as they do not fear men as much in this area where human life is scarce.
One of the most extraordinary activities in the Brazilian Pantanal is watching caimans which abound in the area. Hop on your small wooden boat and travel up to rivers teeming with these impressive and frightening animals. Don't try to reach out as they might try to snatch your hand! But maybe you will get the chance to feed them huge chunks of meat with some long iron forks.
